The technology behind Sora is an adaptation of the technology behind OpenAI's DALL-E 3, a text-to-image model that was released in September 2023. Sora was named after the Japanese word for sky to symbolize its limitless creative potential.

OpenAI has shared previews of Sora, showcasing its ability to generate high-definition videos up to one minute long. However, as of February 2024, Sora is unreleased and not yet available to the public.
